What you see from the houseboat

The boat does not enter the sanctuary itself, but it passes close enough to see the mangrove trees and the shore. If birds are active, you will spot herons, egrets, or kingfishers along the edge. Binoculars help but are not required.

Best months for bird watching

November to March is winter migration season. Siberian cranes, teals, and other migratory species arrive during this period. The early morning breakfast cruise is the best time to see them since they are most active at dawn.

Walking inside the sanctuary

If you want to walk inside the sanctuary rather than just passing by on the boat, you can visit it separately before or after your houseboat trip. It is open to visitors and has walking trails. Entry is free.

Bird watching tips for the cruise

Book an overnight package if visiting during winter. The morning cruise gives the best bird sightings.
Bring binoculars if you have them. Phone cameras struggle with bird photography from the boat.
Ask the captain to slow down when passing the sanctuary. Most are happy to do this if you tell them you want to watch for birds.

How do I get to Kumarakom jetty?

Kumarakom is 32 km from Alleppey and 60 km from Cochin airport. We can arrange pickup from either location. Taxis from Cochin take about 1.5 hours. Most guests arrive at the jetty 30 minutes before noon boarding time.

Can I do a same-day return or do I have to stay overnight?

Both options are available when it comes to Kumarakom house boat booking. The day cruise runs from 11 am to 5 pm and includes lunch and snacks. The overnight package runs from 12 noon to 9 am the next day and includes all meals. Day cruise is good if you are short on time or staying at a nearby resort.

Is the bird sanctuary visit included in the houseboat package?

The Kumarakom boating cruise passes by the sanctuary but does not dock inside it. You see it from the water. If you want to walk inside the sanctuary, you need to visit it separately either before or after your houseboat trip. Entry to the sanctuary itself is free.
